"Proof"

Students of Page to Stage, a theatre and literature seminar, read, analyzed, workshopped and wrote about Proof  last fall. They had chosen to design, produce and perform the play in the outdoor amphitheatre adjacent to Mizan. We are still mourning the loss of what looked to be a splendid spring evening production that could have fit over 200 in the audience. The plan included four lighting trees, black dividers enclosing the area from outside traffic, a reception on the lawn during intermission, crickets, a moon, a breeze, the perfect setting for a play that takes place entirely on a porch.

In these  paragraphs, students re-evaluated their directorial “concept” for Proof from the perspective of new light that isolation and confinement shed on the play’s meaning and messages. They now needed to perform scenes in tiny spaces without their scene partners.

Pajama Battles:

Scenes from Moliere's "Misanthropes"

These honor-level students read, analyzed and workshopped scenes from Moliere’s The Misanthrope. The plan was to perform contemporary versions of scenes from this play in the Gallery.

Instead, this delightful class came up with a concept that catapults Moliere not only into the 21st century but right smack into confinement pajamas and all

CURTAIN SPEECH: I chose to direct an adaptation of Witness for the Prosecution after seeing it for the first time in London. The main thing that drew me in was the thrill and mystery of seeing a murder solved before your eyes and having a chance to participate and decide the verdict as well. Directing this play was not easy, between cutting the play down to fit 30 minutes to finding the perfect cast and balancing rehearsals with schoolwork we still managed to produce something different and unique.
